Default Going nuts

I am new to digital photography and obviously to editing photos as well. I am trying to do a simple task like adding text to my photos but I'm running into some problems. When I click on the "T" and then on the picture to add the text, the text is so small it's hardly visible and when I set it 72pts. it should be huge but it's not, at this setting it looks more or less like 14pts. What am I doing wrong here or is there something that needs to be set in preferences? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

When working on the a word processor, the image of the page might only be 800x600. A 14pt font will take up 1/80th of the page. The images from a 14MP camera are usually 4600x3100. That means a 14pt font will only take up 3/1000 of the page. To match the size of a 14pt font over 800px, you will have to use 80pt font on 4600px. So, you aren't doing anything wrong, you just aren't making the font large enough to match how large the image is.
