I was also using that trial version, but there is another one since they realese LR3. That's the one im using for another 30 days. Links to legit sites are perfectly fine. Just a fair warning (not that it's happened in this thread yet), but any links to/suggestions of illegal file sharing sites or sites that help you get around buying software will be deleted.
My suggestion would be Picasa (for somewhat similar cataloging abilities, though not necessarily as good with editing). I don't know of any open source alternatives or other freeware alternatives.

Since you're a student you may also have another option. I know that in the U.S. they also market student/educational versions (they're full versions) for about a third of the full retail price. You may actually be able to afford it after all.
