Angry Lightroom 2 Develop module slowness

When I first ran Lightroom 2 on my freshly-installed Windows 7 machine, it was zippy, responsive, and lag-free. Now that it's been a while, however, it's gotten really slow, especially in the Develop Module. There's a severe lag between adjustments being made and them showing up on the screen, and even going into the Develop Module from the Library one can take a few seconds.

I've purged my cache, moved it to my internal SSD, optimized my catalogs, and defragged all my drives. It's still slow. It can't be my machine because it used to be quick, and it seems like it's getting worse by the week, but here are my specs, anyway:

Intel 64-bit Quadcore 2.88 GHz CPU
4gb Ram
SSD cache drive
Nvidia 8800GT

For all intents and purposes, my computer is more than capable of handling LR2. Yet for some reason the Develop Module is painfully slow. Any ideas why and, more importantly, how to fix it?

Virus, worm, trojan???

I notice the same problem at times, and feel it is due to memory leaks. When it happens I normally shut down MS Outlook to free up some memory and it helps.

I've got all my apps shut down other than Lightroom, and I'm definitely malware-free.

Ok, then the next step is to reinstall lightroom, something is wrong and you should be able to fix it by doing an over install, just the way you would when you upgrade to a new release. What version are you running? The current one is 2.7xx

I'm running 2.5, so I'm due for an upgrade anyway. Doubt it'll help, but it's worth a shot.
