Default Help with Gimp

I know this is probably the wrong place for this question, but I'm hoping someone can help me.
I've just installed the free Gimp software, and looked through several tutorials, etc. Is there a way to get all of your pictures onto the software where you can scroll through and view the pictures instead of having to access them by file name?
Thanks

Gimp does not have any type of catalog or thumbnail view that I am aware of. If you are shooting raw, the best bang for the buck is, in my opinion, Raw Therapee. You can just export from there if you wish. If you are shooting Nikon, ViewNX is pretty good as well. You can just right click, and edit with Gimp if you wish. This is assuming you are on a Windows box.

The operating system you are on is very important. My choices would be IrfanView (Windows), iPhoto (Mac) and gThumb (Linux) but it is only the Mac I have used recently for my main photo management tasks. As RLucas says, Gimp is a tool to edit rather than organise your images.

Technically you can view thumbnails in GIMP, it's called "file -> open". At least, I remember doing this in Linux, not sure about Windows. It's not really the best option, but it works.

While we're throwing out recommendations, I use Windows RAW image viewer (free download) to preview, and UFRaw to import RAW files. I don't use any cataloging software. There are lots of other options, too, as you can see.
