before you paint on the layer, you must first go to the menu click layer, choose layer mask, reveal all, or clock on the bottom of the layer menu the rectangular icon with a circle at the center. only then can you paint on the layer with the brush tool. if you paint with black, the layer will be erased revealing the layer below. if you over paint, just paint with white to bring back the erased portion. you can vary your brush options, ie, size, softness or hardness, and the opacity. with 50% opacity you will erase the layer partially so that you can see both the upper and lower layers merging. needs lot of practice to brush with the mouse. easier with the tablet.
