What are you using to edit them? Just crop them beforehand, and make sure you crop them using either a 2x3 or 4x6 ratio and you'll be fine. The only reason I asked what program you're using is so someone can tell you the steps to take. As long as you're not cropping heaps you're not really going to be losing quality at 4x6".

Actually, 4x6 should print normally, since most DSLR sensors have a 3:2 ratio.
You need to look at your crop or rectangle select tool in your photo editing program. Hopefully there's an option to restrict the aspect ratio/dimensions. Type in 3:2 (or 2:3 for portrait orientation), and select, and that will let you select/crop to the right proprotions. |

What brand of camera do you use? Canon, Nikon and Pentax have 2:3 aspect ratios which will print 4x6s exactly as they came out of the camera. Olympus, Panosonic and I think Sony have 4:3 aspect ratios which will produce 4x6 prints that get cropped if you print SOOC.
If you have the 4:3 sensor you can solve this problem by shooting a little farther away than you want and crop it MAKING SURE you crop it to a 2:3 (=4:6) aspect ratio. I like FastStone Image Viewer for cropping, resizing, etc. If I confused you a bit there then visit this link Aspect Ratio it's a great article that should clear everything up for you. Hope this helps

The XSi shoots in a 3:2 aspect ratio which is 4x6 or 6x9 or 8x12 or 10x15 or any other 3:2 aspect ratio crop.
