Default How to overlay two photos?

I apologize for the ignorance of this question. How can you take two digital photos and superimpose them? Using iPhoto or Aperture. I guess this would be the equivalent of doing a double exposure on film. I took some blurred photos of colorful crepe paper and want to superimpose some flower macros on top of these backgrounds. Is it doable. I'm brand new to photography.
Thanks!

Default where Layers

A search for "Layers" in iPhoto and in Aperture gave no results. Is it in a different software, Photoshop or the like?

Yes you are correct, there currently are no layers features in iPhoto or Aperture that I am aware of. For those types of edits you will need to use Photoshop or Gimp. I am sure that there are others as well that are capable, in fact any application that allows layers should work. iPhoto and Aperture are more for cleaning up and editing a single photo than creating a new one from 2 or more.

hope that helps.
