Is anyone aware of a way to import the settings placed on a RAW file in camera into Lightroom? I have my D40 set up to enhance saturation, auto tone and auto sharpening, and these settings, along with white balance, are removed, making photos that looked great on camera, look rather dull on screen. I could fiddle around with the settings for each photo, but why go to all that trouble when they looked good to begin with.
I know the obvious solution is to shoot in JPEG, and that's what I may end up doing if there is no way of importing these settings efficiently for all photos. Thanks a million, Allen.

One option is to figure out what sort of base settings you want LR to apply. Say you always move your saturation to 20, your vibrance to 20, and clarity to 50, make that the default for the camera so that it applies those settings each time it imports photos. They won't be exactly the same as your camera, but that's probably the easiest way to do it (aside from shooting jpg
). Adobe Lightroom - Customising Camera Defaults

Thanks a million for that Nicole. Its not the perfect solution, but I think it should work pretty well.
Cheers, Allen.

Yeah, I agree it's not the perfect solutions, but it was as close as I could get when facing that same dilemma
I must admit though, it gets me a much better starting point.

When I first started shooting RAW I often wanted to get the images to exactly match the JPGs that I shot along side the RAW files. The only way that I could find to do that was using Nikon's raw conversion software. Current Versions of Nikon Software ViewNX which you can download for free will apply all of the in-camera settings and render an image that is exactly like what you saw on the LCD and the jpg (if you're shooting RAW+JPG). You can also adjust the raw settings. It's not nearly as user friendly as Lightroom, but it works. Once you're done you can then export high resolution JPGs, TIFF, etc. I don't use this much anymore, but when I was first getting started with RAW it was nice to know I could always get an image that looked at least as good as the one I saw on the LCD.
