Default I need help fixing this in Gimp

If anyone can give me some suggestions on how to get rid of the wet spots on my son's shirt in this pic, I'd appreciate it. He is teething and slobbering so bad, depsite my best effort I couldn't keep his shirt dry. I'd appreciate suggestions on how to make it look a little better. I have gimp and am still in the learning stages of using it. Thanks so much!

You could try dodging it.

i'm not familiar with gimp since i work with photoshop.
if you can select the wet spot and feather the selection and place it in another layer, you can adjust it by making it lighter to approximate the dry areas and merge it with the original layer.
then you can fine tune with dodge and burn tools, if that is possible with gimp.

In this case I would go with the dodging suggestion as the tool enables you to make highlights or shadows or mid tones brighter. You will probably only want to effect mid tones and shadows and use a feathered brush with a bit of patience you should improve it a lot.

The only reason I say this is because using curves or adjustment layers to brighten a selection will brighten the whole selection and theres a kind of ring around the outside of the wet patch which is darkest and will remain slightly darker. I think the dodge tool in this case is the tool as its more precise in selected areas.

Here's my attempt at fixing the second shot. Do you think it'll look ok in a 5x7 print?
