Default Can I Do this with Photoshop CS4 Extended?

I want to take a photo of a group of people and have them pose like they are throwing a ninja throwing star. Of course I can't really have them throw the blades because they might kill me. So, I want to superimpose a 3d object onto the photo in photoshop extended cs4. I have a jpeg of the ninja star I want to use. I want to make it look like a real object in the photo...be able to turn it around in any direction, resize it, etc. I removed the background and saved the jpeg as a gif and a tif. While it will open up in the 3d program in cs4, the background comes back. I just don't know how to pull this off and can't find a good tutorial online. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Donna

You should be able to cut the shuriken out of its original image and save it. Open your background image of your people, create a new layer and place the shuriken on the layer and free transform it to the size and direction you want. I have CS4Ex but I don’t mess with 3d stuff much at all so that suggestion is my best guess.
Here is a tutorial on using the 3d in PS, he is dealing with a self created object but I would think it would work with an image on a layer…

Thanks so much, Zona. I am so illiterate when it comes to Photoshop. The free form seems to be jsut what I need for this project. I'll give it a try.

This sounds like a lot of fun. Make sure to utilize your free transform tool to get the right angle. Also, the drop shadow effect will enhance the object to give it more depth to actually appear as if it is in the photo. If you need any help send me a PM and I will be glad to assist!

The advice you have received so far will do what you want. However, the process you have described will NOT produce a 3D shuriken. If you want to do that you may want to follow the tutorial found here.

Thanks, that's a lot of help. The photoshoot is this Saturday and once I get the post processing done, I will post here. I want it to look kind of like the cover of Steve Caplin's book, "How to cheat in photoshop"...see how the dice are coming out at the viewer? Only I'd like my shuriken to do that.

Am I on the right track?

This is my Shuriken photo:
