Default Printing and DPI etc.

I'm thinking about getting a few shots printed, but I'm really not sure how they would come out on paper as opposed to on my screen.
I shoot with a Fuji S1000fd, which has a 10mp sensor, on the highest quality possible which comes out at 3648x2736. However it only shoots at 72 dpi, which from my (very limited) understanding will restrict the print quality when it comes to size.
So could anyone tell me what size I could go up to with these specs whilst keeping the quality I see on screen.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Joe

My other half, who has photoshop skills (and some other program on her Mac), converts photos from 72 dpi to 300 dpi (as is require for her journalism stuff. Not sure what size these things come out.

I was going to ask a similar question... so I'll just wait on this one for some conclusive answers from the DPS veterans!

Your camera doesn't shoot at any DPI setting. That is simply an "output setting" in your editing program. Most printers ignore that information anyways so it really has no affect.

However, changing the DPI setting will tell you what the print size will be at that setting, and most home computers will print at the "output DPI setting".

I've had very large prints (4ft) done at 100 dpi and they looked very good (but are viewed from a greater distance than an 8x10 might be.)

If you search the forum here for "DPI", "Colour Management" and "Colour Space" you will find a few recent articles full of information that your looking for the only reason im pointing you there is its a complicated subject if you dont have an understanding on the topic. And it saves having to type it all out again haha

But they should have everything you need in there.

Hi Joe, just merged your two threads together and left it in the Post-Processing and Printing section. Much better to have 1 thread so all the info for you (and anyone who asks the same question in the future) only needs to look in one place Looks like you got some good answers though!

Thanks Nicole, sorry for the double post I put it in general chit-chat then realised it should be in Post processing and printing.

And thanks for all the replies, I've pretty much got an idea of what size I should print at now
