I'm very new to photography, but I'm keen to learn. I was wondering if anyone could give any advice about improving the composition and conversion to b&w.

Personally, I wouldn't change a thing. I love that it's black and white (although I find myself being partial to b&w photos). The photo is really great and I love the composition. The lines in the photo are great! Great job!

In my humble opinion, composition seems right on to me, and the gray tones work with the setting.

i hope you don't mind that i played with it...i'm a fan of over exposure, and i don't know what you like aesthetically, but i like it.

I really like this image. You did an excellent job. The composition is spot on. The only thing I noticed is that when you converted to black and white, you lost some of the dynamic range. I adjusted the levels to improve tonality. Also, if you want to frame it, I personally think that I would incorporate a matte also to distinguish the pure black of the frame and the pure black in the image. If you would like me to take this down, please let me know and I will remove it immediately.

I actually prefer the original to the suggested edits. I think the black frame around the shot really helps pull you into the picture, and you composed this very well. Love the tones of black and white you found in this image, and the candid feel you get in this picture. =)

yeah i agree with last post , the only thing i find is that i am drawn to the light smudge by the doorway, i dont think its a bad thing, might be just me , cool pic tho xx

I like Jim's edit because it helped draw out the images using the necessary contrast and brightness to help the subject pop.

Very nice comp. What are you doing to convert? What is the process?

For me, I like to edit my pics then do a gradient Map conversion. If I need to afterwards I will play with curves to tweak the contrast... but that is usually taken care of with my first edits.

I'm partial to high contrast bw too, but I did think your original conversion was good....they can be tricky
