Default A Walk Through Pearl Harbor......

I've visited the memorial several times this year and it never fails to move me. I would like to share four of the memorials in Pearl Harbor, solemn reminders of the sacrifice the men and women of this Country that day in 1941...............

The USS ARIZONA

The Beginning and the End

This photo really struck me....Representing the beginning and the end of WWII, the USS ARIZONA lies fallen in the foreground, while the USS MISSOURI stands proud in the background.

The USS BOWFIN

DSC_4410____

The USS BOWFIN was launched exactly one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor, earning it the nickname "The Avenger of Pearl Harbor". It seems proper that its final port would be here.

The USS OKLAHOMA

USS Oklahoma Memorial

On that fateful day the USS Oklahoma was one of the many ships lost, taking 429 Sailors with her. This beautiful monument stands in front of the USS MISSOURI to honor their memory.

The USS MISSOURI

USS Missouri

The ship where the Second World War ended. Anchored in Tokyo Bay, the Japanese formally surrendered to the Allied Forces on September 2, 1945 aboard her decks. A seal lies in the very spot, along with the original Instrument of Surrender.

The Memorials at Pearl Harbor are beautiful reminders of a tragic day. They honor those who gave there lives for our country, those who were affected by the attack, and the families left behind to deal with the grief and loss. I recommend to anyone with the ability to visit Hawaii to see these sites. I hope you enjoyed these and I will post more if you like or you can click any of the photos to visit my Flickr page. Thank you!

Tragic day. I havent been there but my husband was in the Navy. He told me about coming into the Harbor and how emotional it was for everyone on board

The Missouri did not just retire at the end of WWII she went on to serve in other theaters. I was in Tuy Hoa, Vietnam on the coast in 1968 watching as "Big Mo" fired 16inch shells over our head 15 miles in land. Some where I have pictures of her blowing smoke rings each time her cannon fired- wish I could find those pictures now. "Thanks for the memories" as Bob Hope used to say!
