Default How do i photograph kids who are always on a run?

Hi,

I pursue photography as a hobby and wanted to know how do i photograph kids who are always mobile.

Should I stick to auto mode on my camera or switch to shutter priority mode. What would be the ideal shutter speed so that my image is in perfectly in focus.

I don;t own any DSLR camera. I just have my Nikon P90.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I don't own one, however I would try it in sports mode first.

Shutter speed has nothing to do with focus, it allows you to "freeze" motion depending on the shutter speed. I would start at around 1/250 second and go up from there if need be..

Thanks richard. Will try this. What i was trying to convey is that in case of longer shutter speed like 1/30 or 1/60, the photograpgh could get blurry..

1/30, and possibly 1/60, would make it very difficult to hand hold especially if you are zoomed in close let alone stop subject motion..

Glad to help out.

Keep in mind that using a faster shutter speed indoors where there is little light, might leave your photographs underexposed (ie. dark). You'll have to compensate for this by either:

1. Increasing the ISO value so that the sensor is more sensitive to light, allowing you to use a higher shutter speed and still produce a well-expose photo, or

2. Reduce the aperture number to allow in more light.

I took a look at the P90 and I think the camera will carry out both of these actions for you automatically in Auto mode, but in aperture priority or manual mode, you may need to do this yourself.
