Default Makeup

Does anybody have good tips or linkage for makeup?

We're messing around with my studio lights and want some ideas, the most I've found so far is "apply more makeup than you normally would".

Cheers,

DHG

P.S. It's not for me, its for the girlfriend.. honest!

Get the girlfriend to do it. Use Google images for inspiration. But yes, put more than usual.

Call your local Mary Kay representative and tell her you want to give her some good prospects for her make up business. I've done this for years. The MK girls are not allowed to charge for their services either! A HUGE plus is Mary Kay make up is as flat as carpet under photographic lights, unlike some brands that shine like glass. I've got about four gals I use depending on where the client lives and the day of the week she is scheduled for. One even comes to the studio and does it here and sometimes even waits so she can change the color of the eyeshadow for certain clothing changes!

Benji

P.S. I usually give the MK gal a free session of her or her family in "payment" if she does lots of these free make up sessions for me.

Well she went for more than usual and the photos turned out quite good for a first attempt.

I did a short course in studio portraiture lighting a little while back, and the guy who ran the course (a very experienced pro portrait photographer) suggested: "If you're not using a make-up artist, then get women to put on their makeup as if they were getting ready for a special night out, but tell them to use matte make-up, as anything remotely shiny will just make them look sweaty once you start using studio flash."

And in the experience I've had since then, he was absolutely right.

Russ.

Why would you use more ? That is bogus advice. Use less. The camera will capture it all and then you have to fix it. Best advice, use a professional makeup artist. All you need is a concealer and a light touch to smooth out skin tones. Also watch for matching face to chest, arms, etc. Never let the model do her makeup, they will favor what they think is best which generally isn't. you are the photographer, stay in control.

Sorry Dale, but from experience more is better. Using a makeup artist is all well and good (they add more too!), but it's beyond the scope of what most of us do.

Forgive me for taking this personally...

3 other posters have mentioned that this is the technique they use. That makes 4 with me. On top of that, 3 of those posts included outside ressources. That makes 7 people. 7:1 seems a bit one-sided, no?

Please, if you're going to troll, do it elsewhere.

(sidenote: I've taken a look through your flickr stream. This must be a case of "Do as I say, not as I do". If you had a makeup artist for those shoots, you need to fire him/her and get a new one. That, preferably, isn't blind.)
