(New to DSRL and my first post here - it's specifically about portrait photography on the Nikon D300 and the settings of that camera - if this should be in a different forum please let me know/move the post, thank you)
Nikon D300, Nikon 35mm f/1.8 lens, ISO 400 or ISO 800, low light, no flash. I am finding that the camera re-focuses on the subject too frequently, resulting in out of focus images. What are the ideal autofocus settings for this camera, how should the metering be set-up, etc. Any tips or suggestions most appreciated! Many thanks in advance. |

The D300 can focus once, continually or manually (switch on the front, near the bottom left (from the back of the camera) near the lens mount). The switch says C-S-M. Continuous, Single, Manual.
Switch it to single and see if that helps. Also keep in mind that at f/1.8 your DoF will be VERY shallow and depending on the your shutterspeed you could be introducing motion blur too. Do you have an example to show us?
