taking natural photos

i like taking photos of people when they are at there most natural, especially when im travelling. now i know most people dont like having a big dslr put in there face, so does anyone know how i can take pictures of people who arent models without them posing, and still not looking like some sort of pervert.

A long telephoto lens would probably be the only way with out them noticing unless you got one of those right angle lens but the quaitly isn't great.
