Lens suggestion for Nikon D80

Hello,

I a newbie to photography. I am currently looking for a better lens for my Nikon D80. I am not too happy with the lens that came with the camera. I mostly take picture of family or family events. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

What is your budget?
Why are you not happy with the lens that came with the camera (don't even know which one)?

You can consider the 50 f/1.8. The focal length is suitable for portraits and it is cheap & sharp.

-It is the kit lens
18-135mm AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor lens

-I just went to a family wedding. I took some pictures in church and the result was not what i wanted. Perhalf it is operator error too.

-I am looking to spend between $500-$700

sigma 24-70 f2.8 or tamron 28-75 f2.8 good focal lengths for general photography and constant f2.8 max aperture.

For portraits, cheap, sharp, but no zoom:

Nikkor 50mm f/1.8

or Nikkor 35mm, 85mm(?). Whichever fancies you. Try them out first though!
