Default Focus points and recompose

Thanks for all the advice so far I truly value the help.

I have done the focus and recompose thing and most of the time, it was not working. That was mainly with my 50mm 1.4 lens. But on both my lenses, it is a hit or miss. And I know how to do it, I just cannot explain why, perhaps I am recomposing too far from the original focus point? I will try it again to test that theory.

Yesterday I went out on a photoshoot at the beach and then Balboa Park and focused without recomposing, and I must say that all my pictures were much better. I don't want to be stuck on that however and miss out on some cool angles and frames.

So I am curious about all of this talk about center focus only vs. toggle focusing. Does anyone have any input on that? For a 5D that is?
