I have done many single portraits but have not done one with couples, so I want to get it right.
I have a couple that wants their picture taken and I was wondering what would the best route to go. I will be using a Canon Xsi with a Tamron 28-75mm lens. I have available a 430 EX flash with an umbrella. I am thinking of taking the photo around 7PM when the sun goes down a bit most likely in the shade but not all photos will be in the shade. Now with my portraits (single portraits) I usually use a f2.8 - f4.0 focus on the eyes (with the center AF point and recompose). My question is what f stop would be best and what method of AF would work best for this? Also, should I use a reflector? If so how should I angle it? Larger person on which side and how to position them? How far back should I be? Thank you so much for all your help! It is greatly appreciated!

lots of good questions. I generally use f4.5 or higher with a couple depending on what position they are in. If they are side by side or in the same depth of field I will use f2.8.. You can take a look at some of my work and see for yourself what you like and what you feel works. You can also see the photo info to see what my depth of field was.
I havent yet used a reflector so I have nothing to add for that. I tend to keep the taller individual in the back or to the outside of the image. Not sure if its "right" but my preference. Also, be sure to get good close up images as well as full body images. Dont be afraid to get right in there to get the shot. Dana Schoppe Photography Good Luck!! |
