Question Need Help with Photographing an Event!

I took photography in high school over 13 years ago and I am having a hard time remembering what is the best option for Aperture, Shutter Speed Etc for certain pictures.

I currently own a Canon XSI

Lense: EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Zoom Lens.

Flash: Canon Speed Lite 430 EX II

I was trying to do some research on what would be my best option in terms of setting and lighting for a function on a cruise ship. My mom told her co-worker I was a photographer and that I could take the pictures of her bridal shower for her. Although I wanted to kill her because surely I am not a photographer I find it to be a good opportunity to practice on learn.

Any suggestions are welcomed in this little event I have in store!

There is no right answer to your question. It depends on a number of different factors. How long do you have to prepare before this event?

Rex is right. There are a lot factors to take into account.

Try reading some of these articles on the DPS blog. They should help refresh your memory somewhat.

As for settings on a cruise ship; a cruise ship can be like any other place. There are indoor and outdoor settings, chances for rain or shine, big rooms and smallrooms. Do you know where this party will be held?

Thank you for your fast response! This event is on Saturday 8/8/09 so I wanted to start doing my homework and be ready before then. The event will be held inside the Carnival Liberty, in Stage Jazz Club. This is a picture i found online of the Club:

It seems to be a dark room with no windows. My main priority is to take pictures of the Bride to be with her friends and family and of the decorations.

well they are on the eastern caribbean route so you will not be stopping by Cozumel otherwise I would have been glad to meet up. Anyways are you looking for party snapshots where the shots are straight flash and you just have a black background? Or do you want to have the background and perhaps some motion blur with a sharp core image? Or do you want posed shots? Etc Etc.
