Default Photographing a Model

So I have a friend that wants me to help her photograph her to a pageant where she has to provide a picture for her portfolio and her background information, etc etc.

I never actually done a real photoshoot with just a single person... So what should I keep in mind? Examples are DEFINETELY WELCOME.

I was thinking about some poses in front of a tree, and some poses laying on the nice grass.

I'm equipped with my Canon EOS 20D. I have my trusty f/1.8 50mm, and will be getting a f/3.5-5.6 24-105 USM lens soon...

This is a formal photoshoot and please give me examples that will definetely help me by utilizing my equipment

I've taken a look at Saralonde's post on example of poses, but can anyone suggest any poses that would be ideal? (Please post page/row/# from left-right)

Any help would be welcome. I'm very thankful for any suggestions/comments/examples you may have for me and I thank everyone here at DPS in advance.

I' don't know much about pageants but I would make sure they want "poses". I think a lot of models need headshots, just a classic one, so I would definately practice up on that, not sure if it is the same for pageants or not but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Yeah will be definetely be getting SOME headshots, but need some shots of the entire body too.. that's why i said like in front of a tree or something, and one of them covering most of the face + some of the body when laying on the grass.

If you do pose her in front of a tree, make sure that in the final shot it does not look like the tree is growing out of her head or anything weird like that. Often a tree limb can look like a third arm. Hope that helps.
