Default Street Photography

Are there any other DPS'ers here who enjoy doing street photography?

Who are your favorites, what inspires you, and how do you shoot?

All I have to say is, when you wear something this bright,
the rest of the world looks like it's black and white...

I love going out and taking candids of people that are just out on the street. Usually I like to take ones that seem to tell a story. I typically use a long lens so they have no clue I have even captured their likeness. Here are a few:

There's one in every crowd..... Topic was street photography-I described my technique, and these shots were my favourites. And it shows that I'm another DPS'r that enjoys street photography, and that people inspire me.

Whereas, you on the other hand, have added nothing of use to the original poster, just an inane, out of context comment. Ken

I've gone out in the city where I work, but haven't taken too many pictures of people yet. For some reason capturing real people doing real things appeals to me. I haven't gotten the courage up yet to do it more but I want to.

There's an old (pre civil war) town, mostly industry, that has a lot of character. I keep meaning to walk around some Saturday morning there but haven't yet. I feel like I need to get a business card first so I seem legit if anyone has a problem.

I did get a 55-200 VR lens a while back that would be good for this sort of thing on a sunny day.

Took my camera out with me to lunch earlier this year. Saw this guy on the fountain.

I have only taken a few street shots and but I do plan to continue. I do enjoy the stories we make up in our heads on the subjects we see.

I learned something very interesting about photographing people in the street the other day. Normally I am very hesitant to be pointing a camera at somebody, but I was trying to capture people's frightened expressions when a street performer on Fisherman's Wharf in S.F. would jump out from behind a bush to scare them.

I had my lens pointing right at people coming right toward me on the street, and didn't once see anyone notice that I was focusing right on them! The following photo is typical in that t was at 85mm:

Frightened 6

I have a handful of shots like this and I was amazed that they didn't notice my 300mm lens following them as they walked toward me. The only pictures I have on Flickr are the ones with scared faces where I got the timing just right, but I took many more.

I don't know what to think of this. Maybe I was worried more about sticking a lens in people's faces and I didn't need to be?

I LOVE street photography! Although after some reading I found that you shouldn't use long lenses, you should be in the action, rather than a bystander.

But anyways, I shoot with long lenses most of the time, unless it is some event, where it's crowded and someone with huge dslr wasn't something intimidating!

Here's a few of my favs shots:

I don't have long lenses, but I've found that they're not really necessary. Plenty of people out there don't mind. Plus, getting right up to them, after you get your shot you can get their story.
