I agree about the first shot but my perspective is that the man looks really uncomfortable and is really awkward looking not very comfortable and the way his neck is stretched it just doesn't look very natural. But oh well it is still a beautiful shot.

RussHeath, Congratulations! Din't realize that is you and your wife. Thats a wonderful Self(Family & Family-in-making) portrait. I totally agree it not easy to be both behind and in front of the camera.

Looking forward to seeing more fun pictures. Good luck.

Thanks! I've been staring at this one so long, I'm not sure what I think about it anymore . . . at least she loves it. (She still says it's her favorite of the pregnancy to date). So your opinion is in good company.

What can I say? She's a tall woman! Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for trying to put into words what is awkward. Something to work on if we squeeze in another shoot before the baby.

Maybe another thing that could be fixed by me standing on a couple of phone books?

I think both pics are wonderful! I wish I had some maternity shots from my pregnancies. I personally really like the first one....it seems really sweet. Great emotion captured in my opinion. Goog luck to all three of you in the comming weeks!

Hey Russ. I think they are both great.

Can you tell me how you kept the light off the background in the first shot while using an umbrella. Did you flag it at all? I am going to be shooting my first maternity photos and all I have for lighting is a 430EX umbrella and remote triggers. Any ideas for me now that you have done these? Thanks!

Thanks! Sorry I just noticed this reply. Black backgrounds are actually much easier than white. Get as much separation between your subject and background as possible, and get your light as close as possible to your subject without being in the frame. That usually gives you enough relative light falloff that flagging isn't necessary. I think I shot that one with a shoot-through umbrella and the SB-600 zoomed just a little to limit the spill.

Good luck (if you haven't done the shoot already)!

These are wonderful shots. I really like the first one. Conveys so much love. I would love to do something like this with my wife. She is 27 weeks pregnant but is very camera shy. I'll show her these and maybe she'll agree. My luck she'll insist on you being the photographer. Again great shots.

Thanks! When I started taking pictures, my wife was very camera shy too. I think the trick is to take lots of time making sure that she thinks she looks beautiful in every single photo. Once they get the idea that you love making them look their best, it's a lot easier to sell the half day photo sessions . . .
