Default Awesome Eyeballs???

Just wondering how to get the super awesome crisp photos of irides? (plural of iris)

There are some fabulously crisp photos of irides where every vein of color is captured perfectly. When ever I try I get only get an average sort of shot with the iris looking rarely blurry when looked in high res.

Is it the lens, the camera body, PP or just me?

Cheers

Macro lens, short shutter speed, potentially a diffused flash. That'll get you the best results.

We had some fun the other day at work with a guy's 60mm macro and a T1i.

in my experience...

LIGHT..
you need the light to be near perpendicular to the axis of the camera.
(see my "Aperture eyes" shot in my flickr)

on board flash just murders all the detals in the eye (any light directional with the axis of the lens)

light from underneath or the side and the details pop out.. with a bit of coaxing by the dodge, burn and saturation tools you can get some fantastic results.

thats point 1.

Point 2
you need to put the focus point on the iris.. and a narrow DOF will help pop them out but you will need to get your focus right.
my aperture eytes shot was done with a 70-300 at something like 200mm & f/8 ...so it isnt the end of the world.. what you use..

the lighting is what brings out the colour and details. soft but directional.
just dont let any motion blur in by increasing shutterspeed.
thats my humble opinion

Candleman, that's an awesome photo! I haven't tried lighting the eye, only relied on natural.

I'll try those two points when I get the chance.

cheers

Thanks Free,

obviously i edited in the blades in, so its only partially related to your question... so its not a "natural" shot like you were aiming for, but the technique does still bring out the details.. i just tweaked them a tad in my shot.
some of the natural details are still visable
