Default Photographing Someone's Dog

I've been asked to photograph someone's dog and could have sworn someone on this site has done professional pet photography.

I can photo my pets because I understand them (dog, bird, rabbit) but I'm not sure about someone else's dog.

I've already suggested we do the shoot at their residence in order to keep the pet more comfortable. I'm figuring outdoors, backyard, starting with no flash and possible trying to introduce flash a little later, just in case I can make it work. Off camera naturally.

I've read the pet photography article here on DPS, get down low, follow the action, be patient, etc... Which is pretty much how I do my own pets.

Any other suggestions? I've got plenty of time, we haven't set the date yet.

Edit: Oops - I was reading something in this forum when I started this message. If a mod could move it to an appropriate area I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Default dog

I just did some photos for a friends kennel website. (I'm by no means a pet professional) There were challenges. Sounds like you have covered the set up - at their place where the dog is more relaxed. Be patient. I just sat outside ready to shoot and let the dogs get comfortable with me and then followed 'em around - and got the shots - it was much easier than trying to force them to pose.

Be at their level for the most part. Some shots do turn out kind of cool when you are above or below them. Good luck.

I shoot show dogs and that is a bit more demanding because the owners want something very specific out of the shots. But here are some tips I can offer you. Bring along some treats to offer to the dogs, eating has a calming effect on the animals and they will tend to like you more and look to you for more treats. Also a squeaky toy will often get their attention and put some animation into their eyes. I like to work with a tripod and remote trigger device, set the camera up and move to about a 45 degree angle (camera left) make a noise to get the dogs attention and toss a toy or a treat to my left (in front of the dog) before the dog has a chance to go for the toy/treat take the shot. Mostly I shoot in front of a backdrop so that is not a concern for me but be aware of what is in the frame and remember it is the dog that your customer is interested in. Hope that helps.

Thanks fo the advice from both of you. I'll certainly attempt to put it to good use. Not sure when I'll be doing the shoot but I would suspect within the month.

Ive found with my dog that she can blink faster than the flash can fire: i often get her with her eyes closed.
