Default First time Headshot Advice

Hi everyone,

Recently a actor friend of mine asked me if i would consider doing some headshots for him. I have wanted to try my hand at this for some time, and this a a great way for me to do it. Today i spend a few hours looking at examples online and cant seem to find anything conclusive about the general guidelines for Theater Headshots.
I've seen threads of people that use anything from 38mm to 135mm, with everything from a full studio of lights to a just natural lighting.
All those things are a matter of preference on the photographers part i believe but i have not found anything about the subject himself. it seems most of the time they are serious and looking into the camera, but i have found a lot that have more happy or emotional, and looking of to the side. Some people say stick with color, and some say B&W is fine. I am also confused about how much, if any of the shoulders/chest to show.

Does anyone have any advice? or a starting point for me?

There is a thread on flickr that may help you lean to one way or another. Hope that helps.
