Fashion photography.. first try

A friend is a fashion student and she asked me to do some shots for a portfolio for her. I don't feel too bad accepting - the alternative would have been her own P&S (i.e., she wasn't going to hire a pro).

I've got the two lenses in my signature, but I've been looking for an excuse to get the Canon 50mm fixed f/1.8. B&H has it for $85 + shipping. Is this a good idea for this project?

It's cold outside so we're probably going to have to shoot it somewhere indoors. I don't have access to studio lighting.

What are you planning on shooting these like?
If you're going to be indoors, I would suggest doing a single window light source from the side, or from behind the model with very heavy shadows and contrasty highlights. Fashion photography has really been all over the place lately so you can't really go wrong style-wise. H&M has been doing very sharp lighting with retro-coloring and a washed out sort've look, while APC does stuff that looks like it was done with a P&S and a yellow lightbulb in a dish reflector from OSH.
Go crazy and see what happens. Just make sure everything has a similar look and feel.
