Default Having trouble with white clothing

Can anyone give me any tips for taking pics with white clothing. I just can't seem to get the clothes not to be blown out. This one isn't too bad, but its still there...and it irks me. And I even took this picture like half an hour before sunset.

Camera: Nikon D40
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/800)
Aperture: f/4
Focal Length: 26 mm

Wow - you must have some awsome light in that room - when I shoot at 1/800 F 4.0 my pictures are really dark. Even with the ISO bumped up. Is there something else that you are doing that's not reflected in your Exif?

the wedding shoot i did taught me this.
Dont use "Spot" metering on a white subject
you can fix it by switching metering modes.. or at least it will be a contributing factor

which metering mode did you use?

Actually, I'm thinking it might have been matrix metering, assuming that is black velvet or something under the basket (and not a product of PP). If so, the dark is much more prominent that the white, and the camera might be exposing for that. You could dial in negative exposure compensation and look at the histogram or the highlight blinkies as a guide.
