This is one of mine [desaturated, I was in a desaturated mood] taken with my 24-70 at about 10 meters, Iso 800... I'm only new at this and can only advise to keep your iso up and get a fifty...1.8 or 1.4 They are a great lens if you can get in close.. Sadly on this occasion I didn't have my fifty with me.

Would you recommend buying a brand new 50, or would a craigslist used version work just as well. I am just iffy about buying something used, when for $40 more I can get it straight out of the wrapper.

I'm not sure what Craigslist is, but I buy used on ebay but only from people with a high number of feedbacks and a very high percent (over 99%), and also people who regularly sell this kind of stuff (for example, not from someone who sells comic books and then sells one lens)
