Default Frozen smiles

Recently i just noticed the way people do a smile whenever i point a camera at them, meaning that every photo of them will be the same smile over and over again.
Some of them (friends) also disagree with candid-ish photos because they dont want themselves to look stupid with a half blinking eye and a half open mouth.

What can i do about this? Especially at an event or something, getting smiles all the time is pretty lame. I know we can use a telephoto for this, but i dont think that'll work since i cant imagine myself being at an event where i can blend in so easily.

P.S. What do you think i can say to them to make them stop it?

Thanks!

I do a lot of candid shots at events, and no matter what, people want to look their best for the camera. When it comes to candid photography like that, a telephoto is your friend. It allows you to remove yourself from the situation, while still getting up close and personal with the pictures. If they notice you and smile for the camera, take the picture and just catch them again once they've gone back to ignoring you, because they will.

There's also the street photography technique which can be good for candid shots. But that one takes lots of practice at shooting from the hip.

I'm sure others will come alone with more advice though

^^ +1 ^^

I use a telephoto all the time for candid shots. You don't have to use the ones with their mouths open and tongues hanging out.
