What kind of non pro equipment are we talking about? Almost all cameras have a self-timer. Read your instruction manual to find how to use that. Put the camera on a tripod. Stand in front of the lens, so it will hopefully grab focus on you Or, if you can manually focus, then do that before starting the timer--that way the focus won't change between when you start the timer and when you step in the frame.

To give better help, what kind of equipment are you using? What's the shooting situation--lots of stuff competing for auto-focus/poor lighting/strangers who'll steal your camera?

Mark Wallace does a piece on self-portraits on AdoramaTV you may find to be of interest...check it out at the linky below.

You don't need all the fancy equipment...you can modify according to what you have. What is important is the methodology behind it. Hope that helps...

without pro equipment? I don't think a shutter remote is considered "Pro" or is there a pro version, but they normally cost $20-$50... I know my canon remote wireless shutter cost me about $30 and it made my self-portraits easy, just the framing is a bit more difficult without seeing myself, but that can fixed if I had a monitor mounted on the camera or near it and use tethering to see the results or live view as well and properly frame myself into the shot.
