Could someone tell me what settings I should have used?
I only used the built in flash from about 8 to 10 feet.

f/3.5 is definitely going to give you way too shallow a depth of field for a shot where people are not on the same plane. I'd have probably shot this at around f/8, but unfortunately the pop-up flash really isn't going to help you much in that case.

Check out the DOF calculator. It's a great tool to learn about how distance from your subject, focal length, and aperture work together in DOF.

ETA: Are you sure you were that far away (8 - 10 ft)? If so, the people in back should have been in better focus. Also, it actually looks like the focus fell on the check closest to the camera. How/where were you focusing? And at 1/60th, you might have a bit of camera shake or motion blur.

I was about 8 feet away & in "P" mode.
I selected the ISO & the camera selected 1/60 & the fstop of 3.5.
If I connected my external flash & went to manual mode & selected F8 I wonder what shutter speed should I have used?
I find the calculator thingy hard to follow.

If you have a speedlight, then by all means use it. If you shoot in aperture priority and put your flash on ETTL, it should give you enough fill flash. I don't often use mine so if anyone sees the need to correct this, please do so.

I have the Speedlite alright. It's a 270ex model. I'll mess around with different settings especially indoors in the future WITH the Speedlite.
