Post RAW+Jpeg

I have a wedding to photograph this October. Would it be a good idea to photograph in RAW and Jpeg. It will be a first to use that function? Would appreciate some good advice.

Thanks so much.

This thread sounds familiar ..... in any case.... Shoot RAW. Your resulting final images processed in the computer will be of higher quality. Jpeg out of the camera is compressed and you don't want to do any editing on an already compressed file. Big Trouble!

There are a lot of other advantages too. You can modify almost every setting 'after the fact'. like: color temp, lens distortion, vibrance, clarity, chromatic aberration, color blur, etc.. all without loss in image quality.

As for Jpeg, I don't bother anymore. It just takes up space on my SD card. Now, if you are planning on sending unedited images to the client as a matter of course, then go ahead and select RAW+JPG. Just choose a small size JPG option.

Hi I always shoot both for the simple reason if the card crashes then it's a lot easier to recover a jpg than a Raw, I would then have at least something to work with, for all the space on the card that it will use.

all the best

I didn't shoot any weddings yet, but recently I've started shooting both RAW+JPG as I ONLY shot in RAW. But because of how I handle photos after a production I need a fast transfer from my SD card to the computer for selection process to start. As I shoot model portfolio shoots right now, right after my shoot is done, I transfer the photos directly from my SD card into the studio laptop on site. Then the model(s) can start their selection right away instead of me going on my desktop computer transferring RAW photos would be long wait, then loading it into lightroom, then exporting them as jpgs... all of that took me about 30min+ depending on how many photos we shot from 2-4 hour shoot (on average)... so it was just easier for me to shoot both its not a big deal too as I use a 32gb card and rarely use more than 10gbs.

You did not mention what body you use, but most Nikons embed a fairly large size jpeg image inside the raw photo anyway. There is free software out there (instant jpeg from raw) that will extract that jpeg for you in a batch mode if you need to.
