Sunset Portrait with backlighting

Hi all, I've recently seen a lot of portrait shoots with the sun being the backlight, but was never able to recreate the same effect. Also tried looking online, but none of those match my standards. This is the effect I want to replicate. Can someone please tell me what I need to have/do to get these shots. Specifically how everything is evenly lit without any contrast edges. Thanks!

p.s. Currently shooting with a 50mm f1.8 II Canon

Put the subject between yourself and the sun. Meter for skin tone on the face. Things are going to blow out. It's the nature of the shot, but if you want to control the background a bit try shooting against a dark background.
