Good pictures for advertising need to reflect the message of the advertiser. If the owner wants to be the go-to place for reverse mohawks or whatever, then that's what you want to show.
Just like a photographer should pick photos for his portfolio based on what he does best and what he wants to do, the same should apply for heads of hair for a hair stylist. Kind of generic, but there you go. 8-) |

to add to Doug's point...I would be less concerned about capturing a particular haircut/style and more interested in conveying the atmosphere. Sound like the owner wants a fun relaxed atmosphere... a hairstlyis and customer laughing... barefoot owner smiling by his front door... a towel fight - look at some of Matthew Dutile's stuff. I think he is a fantastic lifestyle photographer.

Yeah, I don't think he really is concerned with showing off any hairstyles. He caters to a wide range of clients because it's a fairly small area. I definitely want to portray the atmosphere - I know at the last place he was, he was always one to offer a glass of wine or a coffee. I know him from working in the theater mostly - he's a very dramatic type of guy! He let me know that the salon may not be ready by Saturday...better have a back-up location. And I've got to figure out what to charge since it's not my typical session! Should be fun though!
