Backdrop question :)

I'm wanting to get a white backdrop, and I dont want the fabric kind, because I'll need to worry about wrinkles and stuff, so I'm thinking eather paper or vinyl. I'm leaning towards vinyl, because you could just wipe it off if it gets dirty (important when you have kids :P).

So my question is, wouldnt vinyl get flare from the flash since its kinda reflective?

Does anyone use vinyl, does it work well?

If you are shooting on camera, you will get reflections. Since angle of incident = angle of reflection, with off camera flash, if it is on a 45 angle, it will bounce harmlessly away on the far side of the camera without the lens seeing it.

I know one fellow who uses vinyl and likes it.

Do you have any lights at this point or just the flash on your camera? If you are working with only your camera's flash I don't know that I would even worry about a background just yet. What do you want the white background to look like? If you are going for high key or pure white background you will need a secondary and many times two lights to properly light the background. This of course is not even lighting your subject yet.

Start with manual speedlites. You can normaly find a Nikon sb-28 on craigslist for around 70 dollars. go to the Strobist to get started with off camera lighting and you will never look back He has the most comprehensive off camera lighting advice on the web! Best of luck.
