I am confused, OP says they has a large softbox so there is, seemingly, enough illumination for each person. Balancing the flash exposure with the ambient, I'm not sure, other than window reflections of the softbox, what would be the problem or need for a north window rather than the setting sun on a west window??? What am I missing?

Setting sun in a west window will be a harsh backlight. And depending on what type of glazing is actually used (such as low E glass) it can cause odd color moire or a cast. On the dark side it will be a big mirror. By going with a north window you will get fill light that can be over powered by the soft box if the color cast is an issue.
