also people are moving subjects, so i wouldn't even try to use a shutterspeed slower than 1/250

Hello everybody, tnx for your answers!
I tried another shooting in a pub, but this time i set up my camera this way:

Nikon D5000 with nikkor 18-105 lens

- Aperture priority
- RAW + Fine jpg
- ISO 1250 with in-camera Noise reduction ON
- f/8
- 1/60 shutter speed
- Pop-up flash always on
- Measurement: matrix
- AF: auto, single, i selected the central focus point.

Then, i used a "dirty" way to get focus in a short time: i put the subject in the center of the photo (so it corresponds to the focal point i set), press the button halfway, then compose, then shoot. (ok, is not a "sophisticated" way, but sometimes i do not have time to move the focal point using the D-PAD. And i'm a newbie, too)

With this setup i'm very glad of the results: backgounds are bright, a lot of thing are in focus, and the flash did not cause very bright faces.

Anyway, i may be wrong: what do you think of this setup? Do you have any advice about?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

here it is.
Not yet perfect, but a lot much brighter and crisp.
The pub was quite dark

sure looks better. if you intend on shooting in dark situations more often, i'd highly recommend investing in an external flash. also, i'm glad to hear you're playing with the single focus points! they're fun, and can make for an interesting photo!

I was going to say it's simply missed focus point....

I do think your SS is a bit slow overall. Also, consider setting the FEV to a negative to reduce blow out and looking like the shot was slammed by flash. I don't think I'd push the ISO much further.
