Tanya,

I read this post about the possibliity of using a Vivitar DF-383 for your wedding, and I also own the same flash so I can give you my perspective. Simply, do not buy it for use in a wedding. The DF-383 is fine as a background flash or secondary, but not the main. The flash is loud when it recycles, and it is slow in comparison to others. I used it for my main flash once, and it blew threw three sets of batteries (which can be confusing to load) within a 1,000 shot set. Many of the shots were dark because the flash did not go off becuase it was recycling. I did buy a Nissis Di866, it is truely awesome. It is very quite, fast, powerful, and has tons of features. The two dont compare, the Nissin might be 3x the cost but it is well worth it. Also I am sure someone probably said this but it is preferred to use a wider aperture than use a flash during a wedding. If you can't buy a 2.8 or larger lens then rent it.

Hi Tanya,

Congrats for backing out. In all honesty, a low end camera would not be a good choice as your main camera. Also, I just shot a wedding last fall, & it's pretty stressful even for people who have done it before. Lots of stuff going on & other people (guests) with no regard for the paid photographer. I had a teenager shadow me with his dSLR for every shot...which messed with my camera's setting since it was in manual. Luckily I shoot in manual & adjusted my settings to compensate. If you don't know what an F-stop is or how it works, how can you do that on the fly? I didn't say anything to the guests because I didn't want to offend (I was the assistant photographer). In other instances, the main photographer had another family member, also with a dSLR, who was shooting opposite of him with her flash going off at the same time as his. A lot of our pictures came out washed out. Which meant a lot of extra time had to be taken to correct the pictures. All because some people believe (because they have jumped on the dSLR bandwagon) that they are perfectly equipped & capable to be professional photographers. My best recommendation as some of the others have said is to learn everything you can about the craft. There's so much more than just pointing at a subject & shooting away. Take classes & seminars, read everything you can get your hands on, & please don't use low end dSLRs with kit lenses to shoot an important event such as a wedding. If you can, assist a pro who is shooting as an assistant first (even without your camera). But I'd still wait until you have learned everything you can about your camera so you understand settings, what an aperature is, how the shutter works, & how your camera responds at different settings. It's not a bad camera...& it has the capacity of being a good learning tool.

Best of luck,

Marla
