Basically to me it works.
(1) On the story, of your daughter at this age, an 8 (2) A negative is the fountain shots, I don't think the composition (with your daughters position and the direction she is looking) works that well. Is the one on the slide sharp? Fix those three and it will be an 8. (3) It's a nice series (and it has been 20+ years since I have taken pics like this of our children)

They are all very cute but I do not see a "story".
I see a series of shots of a little girl, most no more than snapshots. Oh, and excuse my ignorance, but what does fpj mean?

Ah I see. They had to think up something that sounded better than "family snapshots", eh?
talkin' it up just like everything else...

With Richard: the fountain photos arent quite up to par.
The other image thats bothering me is the wicked fringing on the netting in the first image. Other than that, looks great!

I'm not really getting a narrative out of this either.
More on the editing side (selecting pictures, not photoshopping), they're all really similar images. Her head size barely changes from frame to frame, which isn't a good thing.

Hello,
It's obvious your at the "waterpark, or some sort of "funtown" type of facility, but that's really all I get as far as a story goes from your series. But as for "portrait" type shots of your little girl, I do have 3 that I really like! ![]() I like the framing effect that you've got here with the circles behind her head, and the black and white conversion works for me also. ![]() I agree with earlier post, if you could sharpen this one up a bit, maybe pop that yellow a little I think this also is a well composed shot. ![]() And this one is just cute. Again, I like how you've framed your subject with the red surrounding where she is playing, my eye is drawn right to her. Background nicely blurred so as not to be annoying. She is a lovely little girl! |

thanx richard! i didn't expect an 8... was hoooping for a 6 but had expected something lower
i agree the fountain shots is one of the least strong composed... and the slide might be slightly blurred due to not fast enough shutter speed... i'll look into that... and might have to manually upped the shutter on slides in the futureindigo... it's family snapshots just the same... but you can't chase better pictures with snapshots... a different name, a different goal... it's for the psychological effect... mind explaining further on the snapshots? what makes them feel snapshottish? is it the lack of posed picture or something else that gives that feeling? i'm quite able to take up a harsh criticism so please dont hold back.. osmosis... i didn't realise the fringing on the netting before you said it... wow! how the mind overlooks things when you get caught up with the subject in the pict... thanx.. now i have to watch out for it when i shoot wide open with that lens... thanx jdepould... guilty as charged... might be that i got too comfortable with a certain head size unconciously for too long now... mshockley... it is just what you said.. a play ground + waterpark that just newly opened in town.. taking my kid for a half day outting not a really special occasion or anything... my goal is to take pictures occasionally at various stages of her growing up... and just happened it's a playground this time... i really like how you critique... you gave a reason on why something works... so i might look more into that next time... lately i've been actively trying to see environmental objects as a framing potential, and these are what i found on that day... glad you like it... |

Hi! Here is my input for what it is worth given that I am having some compostional issues on my own photos so take this with a pinch of salt....
They are really cute photos. I would get a few really close up shots of your daughters face as she's playing with the water. She has really lovely expressions but quite alot of these photos incorporate the whole scene rather than just "elements" of the scene. Of course I understand what you are trying to do here. Telling a story, capuring your child's life in photos. I noticed that you are using prime lenses. Maybe its not so easy to zoom in especially when your little girl is running around. Cute little girl!
