Recommended Portrait background color

What background color do you guys and gals recommend for portraits and small groups.

I need to get a portable background system and I would like to get the best color for that type of pictures.

White. By controlling the light and distance of subject to background, you can make it anything from white to black. If you want to introduce a little color, you can hit it with a gelled strobe.

Get a roll of white seamless paper (9' or 12'). Depending on how you light it, it can be anything from white to black, and any colour you need.

Lulz. I'm almost certain that is the exact background used on my fifth grade school photo. I'm pretty sure I was rocking some Z. Cavaricci hammer-pants that day.
