as someone that loves to shoot newborns I am constantly viewing others work to make sure I am "up to speed" i guess you could say on what others are doing. and HOLY COW do some of them over use props! I mean there are some super cute photos out there with props but wow! makes me want to reach in and take it all away so I can appreciate the baby!
I do use some props, if you view my baby photos I have a cradle that is very old that I use, and I have some headbands (ok I have 3 and don't even use them that often) and I just got a couple tutus for ages 2-4. I also have some old suitcases I use at times. but mainly I shoot what I am paid to, the kids

Nothing wrong with props as long as the kid is the focus. Now, if you are doing product photography then the prop should be the focus - it just depends on your buyer.
Now that is just what I think. After all, a business person MUST be able to find the client that matches their vision. If you cannot do that - the business fails - does not matter if you use props or not.
