Default What are your thought on props?

I have seen photos using props that make my jaw drop in admiration of the photographer's talent. And I have seen the use of props that is so overdone that it makes me want to gag. I am not going to name out specifics, but you KNOW what I am talking about.
I personally am a fan of the clean and simple look to photos. Just the person and nothing to distract from that. I am not a fan of props in general. But I am know that is a matter of personal preference. I also know that it comes down to the talent and vision of the photographer and his/her ability to use the prop in a manner that it adds to the photo but does make it look ridiculous and cliche.
What are your thoughts on the use of props in portrait photography?

as someone that loves to shoot newborns I am constantly viewing others work to make sure I am "up to speed" i guess you could say on what others are doing. and HOLY COW do some of them over use props! I mean there are some super cute photos out there with props but wow! makes me want to reach in and take it all away so I can appreciate the baby!

I do use some props, if you view my baby photos I have a cradle that is very old that I use, and I have some headbands (ok I have 3 and don't even use them that often) and I just got a couple tutus for ages 2-4. I also have some old suitcases I use at times. but mainly I shoot what I am paid to, the kids

Nothing wrong with props as long as the kid is the focus. Now, if you are doing product photography then the prop should be the focus - it just depends on your buyer.

Now that is just what I think. After all, a business person MUST be able to find the client that matches their vision. If you cannot do that - the business fails - does not matter if you use props or not.
