Question How to Shoot an Exercise Class?

Hey all,

I'm brand new to the forums here, but I've been an avid reader of DPS for a while now. Just picked up a new camera (T2i with 18-55mm and 55-250mm). The 50mm 1.8 is on it's way as well.

Tonight I'm heading over to my local gym and the owners want me to shoot some new photos of a circuit class that they teach on a nightly basis. Some of these photos will most likely end up on their website that I'm currently working on.

The one thing I'm worried about at the moment is the flourescent lighting in the gym and I'm going to attach a photo that someone snapped a while back to give you an idea of the lighting, the colors, and the overall environment that I'll be working in.

I'm hoping someone out there will be able to give me ideas, tips and settings that I should try out (aperature, shutter speed, iso's, tripod necessary?, and more) based on the lenses I have to work with at the moment. Also I should note that I don't have any external flash.

Please see photo attached and if you could provide me with any information or expertise it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again,

Ryan

hi and welcome

No attachment.

Fluorescent lighting is tough becasue it is variable - shoot in raw and you can correct in post. Your lenses are slow for indoors, no flash and moving subjects. Perhaps when the 50 arrives you will have more success at avoiding blur and/or iso noise.

I did some photos of a yoga class (indoors) and yes, RAW and using that 50 are going to be the way to go. I have the exact same lenses as you do now and I am sorry, but they are not going to cut it. You're gonna get a lot of motion blur.
Definitely you are going to have a color cast to deal with after the fact, which is where shooting in raw comes to play.

Okay, I see that the 50 is on the way....
Well, I guess you could try still shooting in raw and using TV mode setting the shutter fast enough to stop the blur. They will probably be too dark, but you can lighten them up in post. Hopefully. Good luck.

Sorry guys, try this link for the attachment I mentioned in my original post. Not sure why it didn't show up originally.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't have the 50mm just yet. Wishing I did! I will just go in and give it a shot tonight. I just attached a link in another reply to the gym and it's lighting. Hoping you guys can see what I'm talking about now and what I'll be dealing with.

Tonight I'll try upping the shutter speed and see if that works for me.
