Default "red Carpet Photography" ???

Hi.I was just hired to shoot a society event for publication in a magazine on a yacht. The client's biggest complaint is that past photographers have not been able to capture the "glamour aspect" due to the subjects being washed out by the flash. What is the best flash /settings to use in this situation? I was thinking some kind of ring flash?

Ring flash won't help you if you don't really know what you're doing. Do you know how to use flash at all? I ask not as a challenge to you, just to know what sort of skill set you're working with so as to tailor my comment.

The reason the last shoot had blown out flash images was because the person was using flash poorly, not because of the type of flash used. Though not ideal, I know I can use even an on-camera flashgun and not get blown out images.

Ideally, you'll have the flash off camera, even slightly. If you know where you'll be and where all the people will be passing through, you can set up an off-camera flash. But then again, it all comes down to if you know how to use flash (other than letting the camera do all the work for you).
