Question Pet Portraits & Shutter Lag

Looking for best camera settings: pet portraits w/ Santa. Need fast shutter to stop motion, but most important is to reduce shutter lag. Nikon D90 on tripod, using LiveView, external flash are Hensel monoblocks. Suggestions?

its not shutter lag,, it is focus lag, go to manual focus and the lag will be gone.

That would be counter productive. The issue is that the AF in live view takes forever where as without it is quick. manual focus would likely take even longer.

I agree,, get rid of live view,, my point was,, it is not the shutter lagging, it is the focus that takes the time to adjust. Also,, the OP said they were portraits with Santa.. Why not use manual focus? Am assuming that Santa is sitting down or not moving around much. Possibly use a higher ISO so you can get a faster shutter speed with the lens shut down a tad to get a bit deeper DOF. Just my 2 cents worth, prob not worth much,
