i went to the school to talk to the principal. i said i would take photos at the sporting events, fix the photos and sell them to him for 1 dollar each. then he could put photos on school website for parrents to buy. this would offset prices for some sports and other activities.
he said no. there are year book staff and other people at school that take photos. i said ok that is fine...then i talked to some parrents, they said the school is always asking the parrents to send in photos. why didnt the principal just say im to cheap to pay a dollar and and to short sighted to see that i can make money for the school. i took several photos for the band director. when i gave him the disc he told me i need to do a release form for everyone there so i dont get in trouble. i know it was comming from principal because he seen me taking photos and being in a small town the new guy kind stands out. how do you get a release from everyone at a footballgame?? none of the photos are anywhere advertising them for sale. even if i sold the photo it would only be to a person that is in the photo |

Why don't you just write a letter to the editor of the local paper and explain how stupid the principal is - diplomatically of course.

Just take the pictures and offer them for sale. You don't need a model release for this purpose. I doubt the principal is as much of a jerk as you suspect. I don't know him, of course, but I do know a bit about school boards- nothing is as simple as it seems for them. My guess is that he would have to get school board approval to accept your offer and he is telling you what he thinks their answer will be. Ignore that and concentrate on what you are doing. This is a public event with no expectation of privacy, you are free to take all the images you want and keep all the profits for yourself.

they are actually telling kids to get permission before you post a photo anywhere...i am just cutting losses and will only shoot a spific person..the quarterbacks father already asked me to shoot him at homecomming game this friday.
volenteer, not me, not at this school. they can pay me and pay me well since from my understanding other than guy for newspaper there is no other photographers in this town. oh well pay 85 dollars for your senior photo in front of blue screen..or give me a call acording to parrents the principal isent to well liked |

Since you already have an in with the quarterback's father - this is easy. Go to the football game and stand at the fence around the edge. Take pictures of several of the players, including the quarterback. Put a watermark or something or the freebies, staple a business card or something to them, and give them to the quarterback. Tell him to give them to the other players in the pictures, and explain your rates/etc. You might find, if your work is good, that you develop a following. What proud dad wouldn't want a picture of his kid in midair, just catching that long pass before he falls into the end zone for a touchdown?
The worst the principal can do is ban you from the field. There is no expectation of privacy, you dont need a "model release" or permission from the parents, and yes, you can sell pictures of children, as long as they are clothed. |

I'll give you a little different answer than you've been getting. I suggest the first thing you do is speak with a local attorney concerning the laws that govern your area. The laws as everyone is stating here is basically US law and I know for a fact Mexico is different. I don't know how this applies to you as a local, but for me as a visitor there are permits that have to be purchased and certain villages that have banned photography altogether.
So, being a public event for most is no problem, but for you, you really should confer with a local attorney before going further. |
