Default Quick Question about Panning shots?

We bought our son a new bike yesterday and he is like a speed demon now! I wanted to experiment for the first time with panning.
Do you typically set the autofocus to one shot, al focus, or al servo for panning? Or does it not matter?
Thanks!!

I set my camera for AI servo and centre focus point only active.

You may fund this tute of mine helpful.

Panning: Motor sport

The other thing I would do is try shooting from a low POV and start with a shutter speed of around 1/25 and go up or down from there depending on your results.

I've also read that you should stand side on to their path and rotate at the waist as they go by. Give a smoother pan apparently. I tried this last week at the kids sports day, most photos didn't turn out too well. I was inside though so I don't think that helped either.
The other tip I have heard is practice, practice, practice!
