Firstly can I say Hi. This is my very first post here, although I have been visiting the site for several months now.
I am wanting to take some individual shots of my family tomorrow and I am trying to get the right sort of look. Can anyone advise me how a shot like this is best achieved? Picture found on Flickr: Code:

I've seen similar shots where they used a really bright light and fast shutter speed so that the subject is properly exposed and the back ground is still really dark, not sure if that helps, hopefully someone more experienced can help you better. Not sure if you could use a point metering to get the exposure right, or if you would need to manually do it.
