Default Vacation Photos

Whenever you go on a trip there is the obligatory photos in front of x landmark (The Eiffel Tower comes to mind) I tend to not like the way these type of photos come out and prefer the shots where the subjects are interacting with their surroundings.

Any tips on faking this? (not sure if this is a really dumb question)

Use props. Have the subject(s) do something like sit on a picnic blanket with a bite to eat. If you're shooting a couple, have them interact with one another. If you're shooting one person, lower your aperture, do a portrait with the landmark blurred in the background.
Just some ideas...

Nice ideas. I like the one about having the landmark blurred in the background.

I agree with petitours.

"Have them doing something"

Some examples - from our last vaction:

(1) Sitting on a bench .(Paris)
Sunday on the Seine (2)

(2) Even taking a photograph - Canadian Rockies.
Maligne Canyon. Jasper National Park.

(3) Posing with an umbrella - Mystic Connecticut , USA
Red umbrella

(4) Interacting with a local - In this case a postal person at St Wolfgang, Austria - from a previous vacation.
